Bulgari’s head of design appraises the 2018 GranTurismo

Talking design and craft

Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani used to design cars, these days he is the Director of Bulgari Watches Design Center. So he knows what he is talking about when it comes to beautifully designed things that perform exceptionally well. On the first leg of our journey, from the Goodwood Festival of Speed to Geneva, he puts the car through its paces and gives us his expert opinion on design, craftsmanship and the Maserati passion for detail.

“As Italians we need to be driven by beauty.”

Fabrizio was a senior designer at Fiat before being appointed Director of the Bulgari Watches Design Center in 2007. Which makes him the perfect choice as a GranTurismo guest driver.

In his eyes, designing cars shares similarities with designing watches: “The shape of a vehicle must suggest its use, its performance and in some cases a dream; watches have the same goals but with the added, perhaps harder, challenge of fitting all this into a space 40mm across”.

The name Bulgari stands for beauty, refinement and grace. For 130 years their luxury jewellery design has brought Italian craftsmanship the global acclaim it so richly deserves.

So it comes as no surprise that Maserati would form a long-lasting partnership with an Italian company that shares its philosophy and passion for perfection.

Imbued with Bulgari and Maserati shared values of Italian style, mechanical excellence and luxury and inspired by the 2018 Maserati GranTurismo dashboard, the Owner’s Watch GranTurismo Limited Edition was presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and made available exclusively to clients who purchased a GranTurismo or GranCabrio at the event.

The Pininfarina styling is impressively timeless. The sculpted muscular exterior has a natural but decidedly soft look, ebbing and flowing to create a dynamic tension that imbues it with a solid but sporting appearance. Moving around the vehicle, the light caresses the curves and straight lines creating a powerful feeling of movement from each angle.

“Beauty is not just a philosophical concept, it is a sort of instinct.”

– Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani

“The sound, the driving experience: it’s unique.”

With Massimo Bottura it is all about emotion, emotion and even more emotion. As he negotiates some thrilling hairpin bends he talks animatedly about his love of art, food ingredients and classic Maserati cars.

For those who crave the thrilling road ahead and the boundless sky above. Maserati GranCabrio: enjoy a whole new perspective.

GranTurismo embodies the irresistible allure of true Italian style, combined with exhilarating, race-bred performance.
